There was a colony of Arab merchants in Canton that received slaves from East Africa. Serge Bilé cites a 12th century text which tells us that most well-to-do families in Canton had black slaves whom they regarded as savages and demons because of their physical appearance. Each Portuguese family in Macau had an average of five or six black male slaves (without counting those slaves' wives and children).
